ELEVATED ICED COFFEE. NO COFFEE SHOP MARK UP
There’s nothing like savoring a sweet iced macchiato on a summer weekend afternoon – or as a well deserved reprieve to break up a monotonous work day. But coffee shop prices can be a little hard to swallow. This homemade version mixes the mild nuttiness from plant-based almond milk, the richness from strong espresso and the sweet toffee notes of caramel. It’s indulgent in the best way. The best part is that you can tweak the sweetness and strength of your macchiato to suit your personal taste.
Pro tip: Make your own simple syrup by heating equal parts (1:1 ratio) water and sugar until the sugar dissolves. This is a great liquid sweetener for iced drinks.
HOW TO MAKE THE BEST VEGAN CARAMEL MACCHIATO
Blend the almond milk, vanilla and simple syrup in your Tiger blender for just 20 seconds on the lowest speed setting. Then fill a glass with ice cubes and add the sweetened almond milk mixture topped with your favorite espresso and caramel sauce. That’s all there is to it. Home barista: level 10, unlocked!
Pro tip: Don’t have an espresso machine at home? That’s ok. We also tested this recipe with strong coffee from a drip coffee maker – as well as strong instant coffee – and both were delicious!
TIPS AND VARIATIONS
- Use a different plant milk. While we love the natural mild sweetness of almond milk, other popular vegan options are oat milk, macadamia milk and soy milk.
- Make it with regular dairy. If keeping it plant based isn’t a priority, dairy milk or cream would work too.
- Dial in the perfect amount of sweetness. If you have a sweet tooth, use a bit more simple syrup and caramel sauce. Those on a low sugar diet can just use the caramel sauce sparingly and use a sweetener like stevia instead of the simple syrup.
Make it decaf. Does caffeine make you jittery? No problem! Just use decaffeinated espresso.
