A healthy recipe using plant-based milk.
DIY OAT MILK
We believe in breaks. Whether it’s a coffee break – or a break for ice cold banana milk – taking a few minutes out of the work day to recalibrate sets us up for afternoon success. But buying oat milk at the store to make plant based versions of those drinks can get a little pricey. That’s why we set out to make homemade oat milk with the same richness as the store bought stuff. And it turned out better than we ever expected with way less effort than we ever guessed! It all comes down to water and rolled oats.
HOW TO MAKE OAT MILK
Soak rolled oats in water in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Then place that mixture inside the jar of your Tiger blender with a couple cups of additional water and blend on medium for about 90 seconds. Filter the blended mixture through a cheesecloth or a fine mesh sieve – and you’re good to go! The final step is to kick your feet up with a caramel macchiato or your favorite protein smoothie and savor the plant based goodness.
Pro tip: When straining, don’t try to squeeze every drop of liquid out of the cheesecloth. In testing, we found that wringing the cheesecloth resulted in oat milk that came out a little slimy. Instead let the majority of the liquid drip out on its own. It’ll be rich, thick and perfect if you just let gravity do its thing!
VARIATIONS
Make it naturally sweet. If you like sweet oat milk, a bit of honey or maple syrup can introduce natural sweetness without relying on sugar.
Leave it chunky. There’s no reason you have to strain it. If you prefer a little texture (and the full on fiber benefits of oatmeal) simply skip the straining process.
Make it tart. A tiny bit of sudachi or lemon juice introduces a pleasant zing. Or go all out and make ginger lemon oat milk.
Add vanilla. Just a drop or two of vanilla extract will have your homemade version tasting like the container of vanilla oat milk from the grocery store.
