A healthy recipe using plant-based milk.
THE EASIEST PLANT MILK TO MAKE AT HOME
For morning coffee, we typically reach for oat milk, soy milk or almond milk. Same goes when making plant based smoothies after the gym. But rice milk is just as velvety smooth as those all star dairy alternatives – with one huge advantage. It’s the easiest of them all to make at home. All you need to make rice milk is cooked rice, water and a good blender. If that sounds too good to be true, it’s not. Those are straight up facts. As long as the rice is already cooked it never takes us more than 5 minutes to make from start to finish. And we’ve got some tips for getting perfect rice milk every time.
WORKS WITH BROWN RICE. TASTES BEST WITH WHITE RICE
When it comes to making rice milk, you’re spoiled for choice. Use brown rice for a nutty plant milk that packs in a good amount of fiber. But for the best taste and smooth uniformity, we prefer using white rice. Either way, mix the cooked rice with water and blend together for about 90 seconds on medium speed.
USE CHEESECLOTH TO STRAIN THE RICE MILK
Cheesecloth will strain the rice solids from the blended rice milk, leaving you with a silky liquid you can use in everything from breakfast cereal to a sweet iced caramel macchiato for your afternoon break. And rice milk keeps in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
YOU CAN ADD NATURAL SWEETENERS
While we prefer the taste of straight-up untouched rice milk, it works well with a light touch of added sweetener. We’ve used agave nectar, maple syrup, honey and simple syrup (1:1 ratio of sugar dissolved in water). As with any sweetener, add a little at first and increase if needed. You can always add more, but you can’t take it back!
