WHAT IS SPAM MUSUBI?
Spam musubi consists of a simple yet delicious combination: cooked Japanese rice topped with sliced Spam, which is typically pan-fried in a flavorful, sweet, and savory Teriyaki-style glaze. A thin sheet of nori (seaweed) is wrapped around the outside to hold everything together.
Sounds delicious? That’s because it is! Spam and rice make for an incredible pairing.
This beloved Hawaiian snack can be found in convenience stores all over the islands.
If this sounds similar to Japanese ongiri, that’s because it is! Aside from the traditional rectangular shape of Spam musubi, there’s virtually no difference between musubi (or omusubi) and onigiri—they are all variations of Japanese rice balls.
HOW TO MAKE SPAM MUSUBI
Start by cooking short-grain Japanese rice as usual—your Tiger multi-cooker is more than capable of handling the task! 😋
Next, pan-fry the sliced Spam until both sides are browned, then add the soy sauce and mirin glaze (exact measurements can be found in the ingredients tab on this page).
Using the Spam can as a mold is a great trick for layering the rice and Spam perfectly.
Finally, wrap everything with a strip of nori and enjoy!
For an extra boost of flavor, adding a sprinkle of furikake between the rice and Spam is highly recommended. Oh, and Spam musubi with an egg? That’s pure snacking perfection!
